Mother Lode assists the El Dorado National Forest in maintaining trails with recon and work parties, primarily the Crystal Basin (Tells Creek) and Mokulmne Wilderness.


Another function is monitoring legislative actions for impact on the use of public lands, writing letters, and attending meetings.

Backcountry Horsemen of California

Mother Lode Unit, in collaboration with Elegant Ears Mule Club and the El Dorado National Forest (USFS) developed the Caples Creek Campground.

Backcountry Horsemen of California has partnered with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics Center (lnt.org)  and also the unique Wilderness Rider program to further education of responsible use of the back country.
